Short excerpt:
The consumer demand for goods and services specifically targeted for the elderly in many countries will continue to rise between the years 2000 to 2040. Econometric studies forecast a direct effect of a shift of the age structure, together with changes in the level and distribution of spending power, so that there will be an increased intergenerational heterogeneity in total spending i.e., the effect of pension reforms will tend to change the intergenerational distribution of income, shifting stronger expenditure to the elderly in countries which provide more thorough coverage of retirees social benefits than other countries.
